Carley Garner Knows Her Options

With commodity markets larger than many traders are comfortable with, options are significantly more attractive than futures today for reasons apparent to all.

Our good friend Carley Garner is the author of a great book seemingly designed for these times and these markets.

A contributor to Stocks and Commodities magazine as well as other media outlets, Garner has become a widely recognized authority in her field. And with her book "Commodity Options: Trading and Hedging Volatility in the World's Most Lucrative Market" it isn't difficult to see why.

Although we don't splatter book reviews over our page very frequently, Carley's work certainly deserves attention.

So what does the book cover?

• Why commodity options are different and what it means to you. How to understand key differences in the underlying assets and the logistics of market execution

• When to trade short options–and how to manage the risk and why careful option selling may improve your odds of success

• Master strategies designed for diverse market conditions - combine long and short options to create the right strategy for any market opportunity

• Exploit short-lived trends through “synthetic” swing trading. In other words, get the advantages of futures contracts without the volatility.

It's great to see a smart woman succeeding in a male dominated business.

With the pits going away you're probably going to see more successful traders like Carley coming to the forefront of the industry.

Strange how Carley Garner and Paul Brittain lost their entire commodity pool assets, "pirates of profit" by selling options. It is no wonder that Alaron had to sell their book of business to PFG. Anyone who thinks Carley has a handle on option trading should just look at her track record.

The book may be good as description, but not as a how-to because Carley and Paul's futures fund, Pirates of Profit, got crushed. I am amused that they are still in business even though their fund went South. I guess there is a sucker born every minute.
